Pit bulls trace their lineage back to the bull‐and‐terrier crosses of 19th century England. They were originally bred for farm work, companionship, and unfortunately, blood sports, but here’s where a big misconception was born. These dogs were honed to compete against other dogs, not to attack their human companions. In fact, any hint of human aggression in a pit bull was a red flag for breeders. If a fighting dog ever showed even a smidge of aggression toward a handler or spectator, it was swiftly removed from the breeding pool.
